Horrific Nightmare
I haven't had a nightmare in a very long time. In fact, I don't remember the last time I had a nightmare. But I had one this morning. And it was the scariest one I've ever had.
This morning I woke up at around 10:30am, but I was still tired so I went back to sleep. I kept dozing off but sort of waking up again. You ever feel like you were half-dreaming and half-awake, and you couldn't tell if you were conscious or not? Well that's what it was like. I was dreaming, but then I was dreaming about dreaming. So I thought I was awake but I was still dreaming. It was really weird.
Anyways, in my dream....I'm in my bed...and I'm trying to fall asleep (in my dream). Okay this is going to get confusing since we have a dream within a dream. So to keep this simple, everything I talk about after is IN MY DREAM
And then I wake up with a start...making unintelligible crys in fear. I stayed in my bed for about 10 minutes without moving a muscle, and I was so afraid of falling back to sleep for fear of encountering that horrific voice with the red symbols in a place that was all white. I don't know what it means. I felt like I was going crazy. I'm so scared right now just thinking about it. I've never been so scared from a nightmare like that before.
This is what I saw...it also moved. Like an animation. The lines, and symbols moved slowly around it. Like a whirlpool...and the face was like a blackhole. It's not an accurate drawing of it, but it's close.

I'm so jumpy and freaked out right now. My cell phone rang twice this morning and I jumped both times. That nightmare really freaked me out. I can't explain it. I know it was just a nightmare, but I can't help but feel....I don't know....it really affected me. Explaining it in words make it sound like it was nothing....just a voice and some symbols....whatever right? But the experience.....what I experienced.....was HORRIFIC. I CAN'T explain it. I don't know why....I think I'm going crazy.

I'm in my bed. I'm trying to fall asleep again. I sort of half-realize that I may be dreaming. But am I dreaming now? I'm not really sure. But I don't really think about it. I'm now having a lucid dream...(lucid because I realize that I am dreaming). Everything is dark. It's pitch black. A dark figure approaches me. The dark figure grabs me by the wrists but it's just my friend so I'm not scared. I sort-of wake up again. Not really...I'm still half-dreaming. But I suddenly have the urge to do something....bad. Well....not bad but....shameful....sinful. Suddenly, my legs start to rise up by themselves. It rises up towards the ceiling, so far that almost my back is off the bed. I guessed that maybe something is punishing me because I want to do something sinful. I shrug it off and go back into my dream. It's pitch black. I visualize and try to force myself what to dream about. Suddenly my legs rise up again. I start to get a little worried. This isn't supposed to be normal right? I wasn't sure. But I knew it was some sort of sign of me being punished. I ignore it and go back into my dream. I try to force myself what to dream about....it's bad....but I want to do it....suddenly.....everything goes WHITE....there are RED SYMBOLS flashing before me...it's WHITE with RED SYMBOLS....I think it was a RED distorted FACE surrounded by red symbols...I wasn't sure...it was hard to make out....LOUD evil, organ, DEVILISH MUSIC plays in the background...and a male VOICE in my head is saying "SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN BORN LIKE THAT!"
And then I wake up with a start...making unintelligible crys in fear. Hey Brenda,
This is Danny. I ended up coming along your old LJ blog while I was searching through it for people in University and highschool who may have one.
I decided to respond when I saw this post. It clearly effected you, and I was just letting you know that these kind of dreams are actually fairly common. I have experienced a situation similar to this, but it didn't last long, and I didn't actually see/hear anything. Where this similar is that I also froze and was essentially felt like I was being controlled. This is a common condition called "Sleep Paralysis." Mine was VERY minor, you had one of the more extreme versions.
Usually what happens in these dreams is that you will wake up and basically not have control of your body. Often, people see things, like you did. The surprising thing about these dreams is that most people see the same things. Either its a man (often to dark to make out, kind of like yours) and for others its an old woman. The man usally attacks the body. The woman often sits on you, often on the chest, and contricts your breathing. I know someone who has had the second one before, and thought he couldn't breath. All this in your mind though, you are often having a muscle spasm, or your having trouble breathing but your asleep so you make up stuff to explain it. The complexity of it is interesting.
Hope that eased things a bit. Its weird, but this kind of dream is normal. If you wanna know more about it you can look up sleep paralysis or its called "old hag" because of the woman which I believe is very common.

Yeah, it was the first time something like that has happened to me so I tried googling "nightmares" but that didn't turn up anything. Thanks for the explaination! That really does eases things. It's conforting knowing that it's a common thing, and that there's nothing wrong with me :)

Hey - me again,
Actually its very common in Newfoundland I hear. I talked to two people I know from there and they both went into an immediate rant about the old hag. Its actually normal to get it there! Luckily I had heard about it when I experienced it so I just forced myself to close my eyes so I didn't see anything, but it was still a bit scary to not be able to move.

Yeah it was definately a scary experience. I saw this "demon" thingy's face and I even heard his voice speaking to me. It was weird because I wasn't sure if I was awake or not. It felt so real. And yes I was also laying on my back which I read is also another sleep paralysis inducer.

That's what messes with people, they aren't sure if they are awake or not. That's why its scary!

Oh yes, one last point that someone told me about yesterday. Approximetely 25% of people experience some form of sleep paralysis at one point of their life. So its a fairly normal occurance.

Actually, all people are paralysed during part of their sleep pattern, paralysed in the sense that we have no control over our body movements, even though we can still move.
It's just one of those crazy things that the body does.
Thankfully I've studied this in psych so it's never disturbed me for extended periods after it has happened, but everytime it has happened (which is often) I'm always fully conscious and aware of exactly what's going on. Believe me, that's super scary as well, borderline traumatic, to be awake and to not be able to move for MINTUES until the base of the brain says "hey, the rest of the brain has woken up, I guess I should too."
(the mechanisms that control sleep are divided into three sections one in the forebrain, one in the midbrain and lastly in the base of the brain, that's the one that controls the paralysis signal, and it is perfectly possible, and often occurs, that one section's pattern will be disrupted and awoken)
I wonder if in my case the 2 sections were disrupted so I was fully awake but with yours only one was?
Either way, it's not a fun time!

No it's not fun at all! Thankfully it only lasted maybe a minute or two. But I thought originally I couldn't move because out of fear. Now that I've read a little bit more about sleep paralysis, I realize that at that moment, my brain was trying to divorce from the subconscious state it was in, and that I was in some sort of "limbo" for a few minutes, and that I actually thought some evil spirt was after me. Obviously, in that moment, I wasn't really aware of what was real and what wasn't. It was not fun!
